Vibe Check: The Mandalorian Season 2 Not As Good As Season 1, But I’ve Been Going Through Some Stuff
The Mandalorian Season 2 Not As Good As Season 1, But Also I’ve Been Going Through Some Personal Stuff That Might Be Clouding My Judgement.
Vibe Check is an ongoing series of guest-written reviews of Iowa City locations and venues, because we simply cannot be bothered to write them ourselves. Today’s Vibe Check comes from guest writer Nathan Cremers, a UI senior who’s really going through some stuff.
The Mandalorian is now well enough into its second season that I feel confident in saying this current season just isn’t holding up to the first. But also I’ve been dealing with some of my own issues lately, so that might actually be the problem.
This season kicked off with our hero teaming up with a small ragtag town and some familiar creatures to take down a fantastical space monster that ultimately just left me feeling empty inside. But to be fair, most things do these days.
I don’t know, maybe it’s just the seasons. I’m also not going out all that much anymore apart from work. Plus my girlfriend and I ended things somewhat mutually over the summer, and truth be told, this series was one of the only things we really shared during our final year. So yeah watching these space rogues fighting off giant space worms was kind of like opening up a wound that hadn’t fully healed.
Many critics have lauded the series for its bold storytelling and different approach to the Star Wars universe, but in my humble opinion, none of that really means a whole lot when your life is an empty vessel. I’m a loner drifting through life, never really connecting with anyone. I’m a lot like the Mandalorian myself. The only difference is my baby Yoda is a fear of abandonment.
My dad’s also taken a turn for the worse. The doctor told us to get his affairs in order the day before the new season dropped so admittedly I didn’t sit down to view this new crop of episodes with the clearest mind. They’ll probably want me to speak at the funeral. I don’t know what I’ll say. I thought I’d have more time to prepare myself for when it eventually happened.
I just really need somebody to talk to, you know? My girlfriend was never much of a shoulder to cry on, and my buddy, Jarren, who I usually go to with this stuff has been M.I.A. lately. It just sucks being trapped in your own head.
Anyway, I’m giving Season 2 of The Mandalorian a B-.
