Motorist Dies Following Bicycle Crash

This morning at 10:27 CDT, Iowa City motorist Thomass Clack collided with a bicycle while making a left turn at the intersection of Madison and Burlington Streets. Clack was wearing an automobile helmet at the time. The bicycle’s driver, Jeremy Forthworth, reports that he considered cycling away, but honorably chose to remain at the site of Clack’s crash and call 911. Clack passed away in the hospital at 12:56 PM.

Clack’s parents, reportedly heartbroken, told The Doily Allergen that they advocate for safer automobiling practices among motorists to prevent tragedies like these from occurring.

The Iowa City City Council released a statement following Clack’s death, excerpted below:

“We extend our condolences to the family of the deceased and ask that all motorists take this as a lesson for how to protect themselves. Make sure to wear your helmet and stay in the car lane. Stay aware of bike parking so as to avoid collisions with drivers getting on and off their vehicles. Always announce your turns. Protecting yourself with such methods leads to lower motorist fatality rates and allows for safer roadways. Remember: Bicycle drivers are not responsible for your actions.”

When asked, the City Council stated that they would not be investing in safer car infrastructure because it would take away from the city’s annual $100 million bike lane budget.
